April is for Unfurling the Body

My three favorite words: farfalla, desahogarse, and proprioception.

Farfalla means butterfly in Italian. Going on four years of studying the language on/off, it’s my newest favorite word in the big picture of life so far; it’s been so since late 2023, I think it’s here to stay. For a moment I thought abbiocco would dethrone farfalla but no.

In Spanish, desahogarse/me has been my fave reflexive verb of choice since childhood. That word feels like it’s always been with me. Long before I knew what a reflexive verb was. Translated literally, it means to un-drown oneself. Call a friend not because you need to vent (what a blegh term, makes me want to keep everything bottled up) but because you need to un-drown yourself. Journal not to let it all out but to come back to shore, to breathe again.

In English, proprioception is a fun term. I learned it from a pole dance teacher! Simply put, it’s the body’s ability to sense itself in space. Your first person sense of your meat-suit moving through present time and space. It’s one of our many senses as humans. Did you know we have way more than five?!

I love how these words sound as I say them aloud and the way it feels to engage all my vocal muscles in making them happen. As I’ve just begun to build a personal reading curriculum around the somatic nervous system, words like butterfly, undrowning, and sensing my body in space have been top of mind. There’s something thematic running through all three words, though I can’t yet fully verbalize it. Something about transformation, breathe, a lightness of being, the body as a structure that intakes sensory data (ie. memory)…tbd.

For years, important teachers in my personal life from the spheres of pilates, yoga, pole dance, therapy, tarot, lunar living, and in my professional life of studying integrative esthetics, lymphatic drainage, manual sculpting, fascial release — they have all referenced the soma at one point or another. It’s taken me long enough but I’m finally turning my attention to somatics in earnest. Until recently I’ve been content to let the term remain abstract in theory but now I’d like to integrate a deeper understanding of my own somatic nervous system into day-to-day living and observe how that applied knowledge reveals itself to be relevant in other experiences down the road.

Starting with cursory/novice reading I came across a delightful interview: 15 Minutes with Nicolette De Saint-Amour on Gravity, Freudian Shortcomings and Somatic Practices. The article itself is less than a ten minute read. Highly recommend for anyone curious to start developing an embodied understanding of somatic movement in their own life.

De Saint-Amour is a lecturer of somatics at San Diego State University’s department of music and dance. She has been one of my favorite somatic practitioners to learn from casually/parasocially via her instagram shares. The linked interview is between her and Project Pilates founder Maëlle Thomas-Traoré. Two quotes from the above interview stood out — emphasis my own:

We’re always relating to gravity and what good posture is has become more clear to me. I think for many people, the idea of good posture is to maintain some kind of rigid form, but in essence, it's learning to be dynamic. I think this has really come through in terms of my sense of self awareness, my habits of use and also how I can also access a greater kind of quality of strength. That’s how I'm able to use myself in a way that feels more meaningful.

I would say Body and Mature Behavior, which was one of Feldenkrais' earliest texts. It's a letter to Sigmund Freud, saying, in a way, that his thoughts were a bit short. He only looked at the mind of a person, but he didn't consider the body. In order to change a person, you have to consider both.

I was intrigued and excited to read this because it all connects to our collective card for April which I channeled for us back around the new moon in Pisces. Way before happening upon this interview!

Tangentially, last Tuesday I reread “In the Paint” by Sasha Bonét. Writing for the Dec’25/Jan’26 print issue of Harper’s Bazaar, Bonet observes that “Painting provides us with a sense of belonging: a reminder that everything that makes us feel like islands in our suffering has been felt by another. That we are in fact more alike than we are different.” Yes.

So, You Want to be a Facialist?

For today’s dispatch, I am sharing advice as it relates to embodying Emperor energy within the esthetic trade, a vocation that requires grounded self-direction and initiative with vision. While born out of my particular experiences working at the intersection of beauty and wellness, such an approach also has broad application in other spaces beyond esthetics and bodywork

I am often asked how I do what I do and am also asked for advice on how to generate professional longevity in an industry with a high-turnover rate due in-part to burnout from the high-touch nature of this work. Here’s a fascinating review from Science Direct about burnout in the beauty industry on the trade-worker end.

Now that I’m locked-into full-time focus with my esthetic practice while studying for a new professional credential, and writing this paid newsletter for weekly publication — I’ve gotten questions around how I manage between these three jobs. I manage by studying (and trying to embody) the archetype of The Emperor.

We are currently moving through Aries season, the cardinal fire sign that kickstarts a new zodiacal year. In tarot, the Emperor archetype is linked to Aires. Numbered as the fourth leading personality within tarot’s major arcana, I associate this figure with channeled inner fire, precision of service, and self-possession.

Instead of binary thinking around “soft” skills v. “hard” skills — which often carry gendered expectations — I like to think about workplace skills as belonging to four categtegories: technical, tangible, intangible, and integrative. Channelled inner fire (think hearth or your spirit’s inner light), precision of service, and self-possession are all integrative skills. While they can’t be listed on a resume and often come from lived experience beyond professional history, these skills are paramount to success in creating a positive client experience while inside the facial treatment.

Alone in the treatment room…now what?

Before checking-in with your first client, remember that you are a skincare specialist who is there to serve — not toil. There is a difference. Work in the spirit of service is enacted with skilled agency, discernment, and positive self-regard. Work in the spirit of toil is done aimlessly, with porous boundaries, and low self-regard.

I mean serve as in what Merriam-Webster defines as: to be worthy of reliance or trust; to furnish or supply with something needed or desired; to answer the needs of; to contribute or conduce; to provide services that benefit or help.

I also mean serve as in, serving face and moving with grace. If your skin isn’t giving “they know what they’re doing” who will take your recommendations? If your hands aren’t giving “safe and considerate” who will let you touch their face again? Whether you’re clocked-in at the treatment room or clocked-out for drinks with your esthie bestie, life is a ballroom and we are all here to SERVE.

Speaking of life, outside of this trade you need to cultivate an existence that you are proud of. Pride in who you are beyond the treatment room is the key to being rooted and confident inside the treatment room.

If you care for yourself, this job will reward you.

If you forget yourself, this job will deplete you.

Move accordingly.

The Painter

Once upon a time I had a crush on a painter. She taught me how to see faces, beginning with my own. Regrettably, I’ve yet to figure out how to translate what I see via pencil onto paper; I’m certainly nowhere near brush to canvas yet. If I hadn’t met her, this painter with a penchant for oil and gouache, I may have never returned to the trade of esthetics. After all, I thought I’d left the industry for good back in 2018.

She introduced me to John Berger’s writing and we both encountered Sally Mann’s photography together. Between shared turns developing in the darkroom she would talk me through her perceptions of light and shadow. I would talk her through my perceptions of written versus spoken syntax. I like to think that just as she taught me to see better, maybe I taught her to hear better. She lived in lines, shapes, and colors. I lived in sound, language, and history. Time shared with her was like weaving two worlds together and telling a newer better story.

It snuck up on me, the fact that I loved her. Much like Adam in Eden, when I’d realized what I’d done — accidentally fallen in love with her — I was afraid. But later, perhaps like Lilith in Eden, I became curious. If loving her felt like birthing a brand new Earth (sometimes painful, always perfect) what would it feel like to reflect that love back onto myself? What could my life be like if I learned to see myself as I saw her? If looking at her felt like seeing God, was a piece of the Divine reflected in me too?

Saint Peter

Doménikos Theotokópoulos painted The Repentant Saint Peter over four centuries ago. Duncan Phillips acquired the work in 1922. It took my breath away in 2026.

On January 4 of this year, I went to The Phillips Collection intent on seeing something else entirely when there was Saint Peter, waiting in the main lobby. El Greco iterated several paintings of this moment in Saint Peter’s arc so that while I’ve always admired printed reproductions, I’d never clocked that there was this version just a car-ride away from me in D.C. The way that I stayed with that painting for what felt like hours but never enough. It must’ve looked like I was planning a heist. I shed some tears from the surprise.

In person it’s mesmerizing the way light falls all around Peter but also seems to be coming through him. El Greco summons a feature of light and a sentiment of anguish, suffusing the two throughout Peter’s skin and clothes. Gaze long enough and you can hear the clasp of Peter’s keys as he shuffles around in prayer, pleading, promising. Never again will he deny his friend who is also his God. His body is strained. The tension in his neck exaggerated by the telltale elongated Greco-stylized proportions that are characteristic of the artist.

Draped in a golden yellow plus a vibrant blue — a notoriously difficult pigment to acquire at the time — reminiscent of the blue often reserved for the Virgin Mary, El Greco has wrapped Peter in colors that narrate his bold cowardice and his future redemption/ascension. God is out of frame yet heard loud and clear because the light speaks of eternity. Notice how it mainly pours down from the top left but also seems to flicker across all four corners of the painting, flashing through swaths of darkness. Holiness bursts out of the shadows, evoking an eerie solemnity. Heaven can only exist if hell too is a place. Here is Peter longing for one while remembering the other.

That chilly January day in D.C. I looked at Peter and I saw myself. Remembering all the parts of me I’d denied because it felt safer in the moment, only to later feel like I couldn’t breathe. Grateful that I no longer lived like that, elated to be free.

God is Everywhere

Alice Walker references Van Gogh in her essay, “Saving the Life that is Your Own: The Importance of Models in an Artist’s Life.” She opens her piece noting how the painter once lamented in a letter while interned away that he was languishing due to a shortage of models.

People need people. Figurative artists understand this. What good is a refined studio practice and a distinct painterly vision without a living model to map memory from? I believe it’s the same for facialists. All the knowledge of anatomy and physiology; an understanding of ingredient chemistry; advanced techniques of tissue manipulation. What good is any of that without a face to care for? Both professions demand a devotion to attention before arriving at the desired result. One summons light to canvas. The other summons light to skin.

In doing bodywork, my labor is at the intersection of science, beauty, and soul. Perhaps it was inevitable for me to embody the profession this way. The naturalist in me, melded into the aesthete, folded into the pastor’s kid.

Life is both long and short, enduring and ephemeral. I do not know how long I will continue to labor in the treatment room. There are so many more worlds of creativity to explore beyond esthetics. It’s the eternal challenge of an active mind. I’ve only just started my own business but I’m already thinking about its next iteration.

For now, I stay. Because between the glimmers and shadows that make each person unique, every client brings a piece of God with them.

Every client is a muse.

What a time to be alive.

We’re living in some wild plotline where a massive technocratic push towards generative ai is part of a larger global pattern that devalues human labor. All while simultaneously seeking to extract as much as possible from humans. Extraction of our time, our attention, our energy, our communities, our natural resources, our bodies, and our spirit.

As a licensed and practicing facialist with over twelve years of industry experience, I’m proud to be working in beauty as a site of quiet yet determined resistance to this patterning. My approach to labor is rooted in what Silvia Federici termed as “re-enchanting the world.” This newsletter is an expression of that approach; my creative response to Silvia’s call and to similar directives from other intellectual foremothers.

So many amazing opportunities for creative inquiry and collaboration have opened up as I’ve continued to write here. One such collaboration was with product designer and artist Idris Agüero who created the branded digital “bookends” now seen at the beginning and conclusion of every newsletter. Idris was a pleasure to work with, attentive, professional, and kind. I approached them with a specific vision and it was translated seamlessly.

In addition to debuting this new visual element, I’m excited to lay out exactly what to expect from this publication moving forward.

Sometimes, you just need a reliably accessible source that’s not an ai hallucination, a tweenfluencer shilling the latest branded promo, or a maha pipeline app spreading misinformation about time tested and well vetted ingredients. This index offers that professional access to paid subscribers.

• The fast-skincare production cycle (à la fast-fashion) has gotten out of hand and I will not be participating in it. This resource is not about featuring the latest, shiniest, newest product drop. Overtime I will add reviewed products to the index as I invest my own funds to research, test, and observe how a product works in realtime over a minimum of three full skin cycles. Give Glycerin Her Flowers

As a licensed esthetician who specializes in facials (ie: a facialist) I often wonder who was the marketing team that put hyaluronic acid on the map. Only a room of geniuses could take a mid ingredient and make it a mainstream darling that everyone recognizes in everyday skincare speak. How’d they do that?! Can they do the same for the more deserving formulation workhorse that is GLYCERIN?

✨💎GLYCERIN💎✨ — an industry OG and unsung hero. When it comes to long lasting humectation, while everyone is scanning for hyaluronic acid in their moisturizing selections what they should be scanning for is glycerin within the top five featured ingredients. This humectant has a lower molecular weight which means it gets deeper into the skin. Where hyaluronic acid has a moderate efficacy in barrier support, glycerin has a stronger efficacy at fortifying the skins’s the barrier with continued use over time.

She’s an efficacious baddie! Glycerin will protect, soothe, moisturize, enhance, and restore. Homegirl will not evaporate in the blink of an eye — unlike hyaluronic acid which attracts water but cannot lock it in. In other words, hyaluronic acid will ghost you, glycerin will hold you down.

Of course, it’s important to not get caught up in the singular ingredient mindset. When looking for products featuring a particular power-player, it’s helpful to understand the ingredient’s relationship to other factors within a product formulation and how that relationship is relevant or not to your particular skincare needs.

A Note of Gratitude

Greetings Venusian Lovelies!

The Earth is counting down to March Equinox. Can you all feel it?

March 21 will bring spring to the Northern Hemisphere and autumn to the Southern Hemisphere. During March equinox nature lives through equal parts daylight and darkness as the Sun appears to sit directly above the equator and the cardinal sign of Aries ushers in spring.

Personally, this coming equinox is particularly special because Venus of the Mind will turn one! Spring Equinox of last year I wrote the following first newsletter:

On this Spring Equinox I have remembered myself once more. There is value in choosing to do labor that centers the wellbeing of others. Especially now, when just across the Potomac hatred is wielded as a blunt tool of statecraft. It is a gift of the Spirit to engage in labor that celebrates each individual’s light. Especially now, when just across the Potomac ignorance and conformity are valued over enlightenment and plurality. I clock in and I get to watch face after face bloom.

One year later (and three years total since returning to the beauty industry) I am happy to report I not only feel the same as written in the above quote but am now even more dedicated to my work than before. Given that I believe our bodies house our souls, for me working in esthetics is more than working with skincare and skin health. All of that is at the surface of what estheticians do. The deeper energetics of working in esthetics is that in caring for someone’s body one is also caring for a vessel housing that which comes from God. Beyond the bare minimum of holding a master esthetician license, I feel a responsibility to keep learning, keep growing, and keep refining my technique as an expression of reverence for the holy creation that I get to work with. Lofty? Yes. Does every esthetician feel the same? Definitely not. While I know other facialists who share similar sentiments I know many more who don’t and that’s fine. Plus, I have never met a waxer, laser tech, or brow specialist that feels the same. In fact, they most definitely are better off having a level of determined irreverence in order to efficiently rip out or burn hair off while managing to make the experience sort of enjoyable LMAO. Does any of this have to be that deep? Nope. But I like depth, it’s how I choose to give my life meaning, so that’s how I approach my work.

The data on how my approach is working out: in my current role working for a popular facial spa-chain I typically see up to eight clients per work day. My same-day rebooking average from last spring through today sits at 73% and my overall rebooking average per pay period sits at 87% — for perspective, the average rebooking rate in spas/salons is ~44% to 47%. When I first returned to the industry three years ago my initial 90-day review had me at a client satisfaction rating of 4.6. The feedback my shop educator shared during that first review set me up for improvement (thank you Regina, you’re the best!) and at every quarterly review since then my client rating has oscillated between 4.9 and 5.0. In Q4 of 2025 it was 4.9 due to one “neutral” review out of 232 appointments — each 50 minutes — October to December.

In short, depth matters!

While I am proud of these numbers within the context of working for a VC-backed beauty brand, everyday I am increasingly curious to see who I can become through working exclusively for myself. When I started this newsletter last spring I knew I desired to craft an experience of beauty that was more considered and sustainable than eight clients a day. High volume is great, but over time there is an increased risk of it coming at the expense of quality and personalization, particularly within an express facial format.

Writing here since last spring and steadily growing this newsletter has given me the confidence to step into a personal vision of work that prioritizes intimacy of experience over high volume performance. Last November, Ivana Martínez Studio was born and I am currently deep into the process necessary to make a full-time pivot. I’ve spent the past five months crafting a long-form facial experience that is first and foremost person-centered. It’s also been fun for me to observe that as my approach in-studio has evolved so too has my approach to creative expression here inside Venus of the Mind. I am so grateful to every reader who has opened an email, read through the various newsletters, hearted, commented, and also messaged me 1:1 with feedback regarding this newsletter’s evolution. I love knowing how something lands for readers and it’s always heartening to know one isn’t just writing into the void!

In particular, and most importantly, paid subscribers are the reason I have been able to turn this newsletter into a viable avenue to support my solo work. Tengo ganas de comerme el mundo entero is a sentence regularly riddled throughout my journal entries from middle school into present day. “Comerse el mundo” is an idiomatic expression in Spanish, translated literally it means “eat the world.” Interpreted for essence, this expression denotes a desire to take it all in — the idiom suggests an ambition that demands no crumbs be left in the feast that is life. It is a phrase that encapsulates Patti Smith’s energy in the following one minute clip from a 1976 interview while touring the album Radio Ethiopia.

I also love how Calle 13 embodies the energy of this idiom when Residente and iLe sing, “cocíname las ganas que mis sueños tienen hambre.” Loose translation: cook me up the drive/will, my dreams are hungry.

One of my favorite things about being on Substack this past year has been reading works by individuals who write with a voraciousness for their respective worlds. Through their writing one can tell that the calling within them to live vibrantly is a strong one and I love that about their work. A Dance With Time

What a year it has been — and the first quarter of the Gregorian cycle isn’t even over. This is where the collective card for March finds us, taking stock and sobering up. Yes, we have a ways to go but there is already plenty worth celebrating because we are still alive and taking it all in.

For those of us in the Northern Hemisphere, sensing spring can feel a bit like dancing in a roulette of uncertainty. Thanks to the climate crisis, every year the dance is a little off. The paces are not as predictable, transitions are no longer clearly delineated, the tempo keeps switching up and the flow of winter into spring is never exactly how it used to be. Still, the cold eventually dissipates. The light of the Sun lingers longer. Calls for snow turn to calls for rain. Trees offer up glimpses of their blooms. Meanwhile, we keep up and dance; finding our collective rhythm once again.

A Question of Care and Justice

It feels cliche to quote MLK in February or any time of the year at this point. Enemy of the state while alive to a paragon of respectability politics while dead. Such revisionism requires a cultural flattening that has reduced his radicalism into the specter of a forever “dream.” Yet here I am, writing about Arabelle Sicardi’s The House of Beauty while Dr. King’s final book echos in my mind.

The stability of the large world house which is ours will involve a revolution of values to accompany the scientific and freedom revolutions engulfing the earth. We must rapidly begin the shift from a “thing” - oriented society to a “person” - oriented society. When machines and computers, profit motives and property rights are considered more important than people, the giant triplets of racism, materialism, and militarism are incapable of being conquered. A civilization can flounder as readily in the face of moral and spiritual bankruptcy as it can through financial bankruptcy.

In our house, the socio-political impact of beauty as industry is often obfuscated. Cross-culturally, contemporary aesthetic practices are largely gendered which renders interest in anything cosmetic as unserious, frivolous, unworthy of intellectual attention. In The House of Beauty: Lessons from the Image Industry, Sicardi pierces the veil and untangles the obfuscating illusion. Crafted with deep love for beauty’s potential to heal, yet clear-eyed about its equal capacity to harm, Sicardi’s reporting shows how the ways we choose to care for our bodies and express ourselves in the world, all exist within complex lineages of industrial extraction, market competition, geopolitical power grabs, and intersectional resilience. At the heart of this book is the very question posed by Dr. King in 1967 — our shared home is the world house and our home is on fire; how did we get here, where do we go now, chaos orchestrated by the few or community created by the many?

We’re in a network of connectivity with each other and the planet we live on. The brands we use and the ways they conduct business ought to reflect the fact that we all make each other possible. And the fact that we make each other possible means that we can help change each other too.

Beauty standards across regions have long been intertwined with colonial powers, and it’s those very colonial powers that protect the profits and interests of corporate institutions rather than the land we live on.

The United States is celebrating 250 years on stolen land.

Presently, ICE concentration camps litter the country; a new one was just proposed right here in Virginia. Federally sanctioned killers and kidnappers continue terrorizing in Minnesota. American Imperialism is now in Venezuela and a certain Estée Lauder heir is frothing at the mouth with anticipation for Greenland to be overtaken soon. There is never any public funding for healthcare, education, or art but there is always public funding for violence. Last year’s “big beautiful bill” increased national spending on military contracts. There was no contention over defense spending but plenty of arguing over SNAP benefits. Let the children starve while we focus on readiness for the wars we instigate abroad and the terror we generate at home. If the ways in which we apportion money denotes our collective values, then death as industry is America’s #1 priority.

Through longstanding arms deals with Israel, American taxpayer dollars funded genocide in Palestine. This current administration forsakes Ukraine and ignores Sudan but has decided to play empty “peace” games in Iran. In this timeline, capital moves freely across borders while human bodies are legislated into criminality despite freedom of movement being central to our species since time immemorial. Billionaires are welfare queens with endless tax breaks in any country of their choosing along with free access to our collective energy grids while we foot the bill in our income taxes and utility payments. The Covid-19 pandemic is not over but wearing a mask is considered excessive and vaccinations are discouraged. It is not a stretch to say we are at the end of a world. Slouching towards Bethlehem yet again.

Breakfast: café con leche y una tostada. Wash the body. Brush, floss, and rinse the teeth. Shampoo, condition, comb and style the hair. Moisturize the skin. Pick a perfume. Put on an outfit where every piece is well-loved, thrifted, or inherited because true style is born from sustainability. Answer the emails, submit the projects, attend the meetings, schedule the appointments. Run the errands. Enjoy lunch at a spot where the locally sourced food always hits and the owners are still donating to aid for Palestinian refugees. Continue shunning every single beauty brand implicated in the Epstein files, it’s quite easy to do so. Re-up on Dieux skincare and Tanaïs fragrance during the window in which both brands are donating a portion of sales to organized aid plus legal council in Minnesota. Walk the dog. Marvel at the moon.

It’s evening, homemaker mode activated. Text the homies who are on the way back safely from a day of direct action, let them know that dinner is ready. Welcome everyone in to eat well. Barriga llena y corazón contento. Stay up late together, laughing into the night. Live while others die. Say I love you while others never get to say it again.

Zooming out and in, I remember the Prophet Isaiah’s vision, received as he witnessed the end of his own world (emphasis my own).

I will bring them to My secret mount and let them rejoice in My house of prayer. Their burnt offerings and sacrifices shall be welcome on My altar; for My House shall be called a house of prayer for all peoples.

Humans are frightful, always have been. Inconsiderate, greedy, bellicose, cruel.

Humans are glorious always have been. Thoughtful, generous, compassionate, kind.

These qualities cannot be spritzed onto a wrist or massaged into a face. Aesthetic injectors do not stock them. Cosmetic chemists have yet to find the formula. They are qualities both inherited and chosen, innate and cultivated. We can learn to be cruel and yet choose to be kind. In that paradox of free will, somewhere between reaching for glory while facing our horrors, that’s the space where beauty is found.

The House of Beauty invites readers to wade into that space. Through their crystalline writing Arabelle Sicardi holds up a mirror; they ask if we’re brave enough to look and then remind us that collectively, we can rebuild the world in any image we choose.

Aloe Vera 101

What is it about aloe? Applying its gel feels like a safe and loving caress. When used in my practice, it’s as though I can hear a client’s skin sighing while soothed by aloe.

Aloe vera (Latin, Aloe barbadensis), is a succulent plant originating from the Arabian Peninsula before making its way around the world over centuries and via trade routes. It is one plant out of hundreds within the genus called Aloe. When aloe vera’s leaves are cut open, they release a clear and gel-like substance popular in various traditional healing practices for its soothing properties, wound healing, and hydrating benefits.

As a contemporary cosmetic ingredient, aloe vera extract is quite versatile, being chemically composed primarily of water and notable for its content of polysaccharides plus phytosterols.

Polysaccharides: They are one of the main types of carbohydrates found in nature and serve as an essential source of energy for living organisms.

In topical skincare, plant polysaccharides help maintain hydration levels, aid in wound healing and tissue regeneration, as well as potentially slow UV/free-radical damage and oxidative stress. Here is a comprehensive review of their benefits from Science Direct.

Given their fatty composition phytosterols work in skincare to lock-in moisture and prevent water loss. This supports the skin’s natural protective barrier — also known as the acid mantle.

Structured primarily of water plus polysaccharides and phytosterols, in cosmetic formulations aloe vera extract can be used either as a solvent, base ingredient, soothing agent, humectant, or in a combination of these functions.

Note: there are many other chemical structures within Aloe vera extract but for the purposes of the following product review, water, polysaccharides, and phytosterols are the most relevant.

The Point

This serum is a 10 out 10.

The Story

It was while gallivanting in Rome last September that I realized I was ready to start my own studio practice, after having returned to esthetics three years ago and worked exclusively for a larger beauty/wellness brand full-time.

As soon as I returned to Northern Virginia, I began to research and test products for Ivana Martínez Studio. It was especially important for me to integrate products that were values aligned in their production practices. Caring for the Earth and caring for our skin go hand-in-hand.

My research led me to Monastery. I loved reading about founder Athena Hewett’s considered and artful approach to ingredient sourcing plus small-batch formulations. As a plus, I appreciated that the product line is informed by Athena’s 20+ year career as a CIDESCO certified esthetician working out of San Francisco. The brand’s Aloe Hyaluronic Moisture Boost was the first product I invested in as part of curating my facial studio’s backbar. It’s been six months, and I remain besotted with this particular serum.

Product Notes

1. Duration: Monastery products are sensorially pleasing to use and nourishing for the skin but what I love even more is that they formulate and package in a manner that encourages less consumption. I purchased their serum at the end of September and only listed it in my product logs as due for re-purchase on Tuesday, January 7th. Depending on how my skin was feeling per my monthly cycle and the day’s climate, on average I used this serum anywhere from three times a week to twice daily. While studying lymphatic drainage in Colorado last November I was obsessively applying it under a moisturizer followed by an occlusive to survive Denver’s dryness. I was sure I’d use up the serum by the end of November but like a Mary Poppins purse, the bottle just kept on going.

2. What It’s Good For: With two different weights of hyaluronic acid suspended in a base of aloe vera, this product works well as a hydrating and prepping serum that also balances out oil production while soothing inflammation thanks to the inclusion of sage, lavender, and clary sage. The entire ingredient list also means that this is a lightweight antioxidant serum with a beautifully aromatic quality.

3. Who It’s Ideal For: This serum is good for all skin-types. However, due to the sage, lavender, and clary sage within the product, in my practice I typically find myself recommending it most to my combination/oily and heavily acne-prone clients. The brand’s website recommends 1-2 pumps and that amount may be enough for oiler skin-types. My skin tends towards dryness year-around, so I found that 3-4 pumps is what I’ve needed for my face and neck.

4. How to Use: Apply 1-4 pumps, depending on skin type. Do so after cleansing and before moisturizing. If you use a hydrating essence, apply this after your essence, then go in with a moisturizer. Daytime, always follow-up with an SPF. Nighttime, due to the essential oil compounds (like terpenes) in this serum, if you skin-cycle I recommend using aloe boost on a recovery night, not on an active night where you have just exfoliated or are using a high strength retinoid. If you’re not actively skin-cycling this serum can be used nightly after cleansing and under your moisturizer.

What Makes a Reader?

When it comes to interpreting the tarot, I’m of the opinion that solid readers are those who know what it’s like to be cracked open by grief and who are practiced in rebirthing themselves after loss. Loss of identity, loss of loved ones, loss of home, etc. The tarot tells a story of a paradise lost, found, and lost again, all on the way to an enlightenment that lands us right back at the sacred zero — an abyss of possibility.

How can one speak to the full spectrum of the arcana without being able to hold the conflict of all the card’s shadows just as much as their light?

Grief is joy’s teacher.

Joy is grief’s mirror.

I also believe that if you enjoy looking at the moon, star-gazing, admiring plant life, bird watching, returning to the same poem, spending hours with select pieces of art, or even taking kids seriously and hearing what they have to say, then you may also enjoy exploring the tarot. Meditating on a card’s imagery is the same as close reading a select literary passage or actively listening to a loved one tell you about their latest obsession for the umpteenth time. There are layers of meaning in a card’s image waiting to be revealed through determined and studied attention.

I’m especially partial to the Tanakh translations produced by the Jewish Publication Society as they work with respected biblical scholars and with rabbis from across spectrums of observation from Reform, to Conservative, and Orthodox. I’ve linked to their translations above.

   2. Fun fact: Many iterations-of-Ivana-ago, I spent four years deep in study for a conversion to Orthodox Judaism within a variant of the Sephardic tradition. That conversion never happened. Partly because towards the end I began to suspect (correctly) that I was a lesbian. What a plot twist.

   3. Second fun fact: Before my unfinished conversion to Judaism, I identified as an atheist for a few years and prior to identifying as an atheist, I’d been raised as the eldest daughter of a pastor. Double plot twist.

Named after Harlem Renaissance thought leader and Afro-Puerto Rican scholar Arturo Alfonso Schomburg, the center is currently celebrating 100 years of preserving, celebrating, and protecting Black intellectual heritage for the public. That it stands today, 100 years into successive political regimes dedicated to our erasure (since at least 1526 onward), is a testament to the enduring power of cultural stewardship. Such stewardship is a labor of love done with hope in a future that the stewards don’t get see but can sense is possible.

We had a delightful chat about the intersection of ethics and esthetics. I will be incredibly meta and quote myself from the interview because it’s the perfect introduction for today’s newsletter:

What are your predictions concerning the future of skincare?

- when it comes to the future of skincare as it pertains to markets, I have no idea. I am not in the business of beauty industry forecasting. I am in the business of skin whispering.

In my personal practice as a working facialist, I see the future of skincare as ancient. What will matter long term is what has mattered since the beginning of our species but long before we even put language to it: lymphatic flow, a balanced skin microbiome, and approaching the skin first and foremost as an organ of protection that is in constant communication with our nervous system (central and bilateral); regulating everything we experience across the spectrum of pleasure to pain and safety to fear.

Every person is a distinct universe housed within a marvel of evolution. I believe skincare offerings should honor that marvelousness. In my little sliver of the world out here in Northern Virginia, inside Ivana Martínez Studio what will always be relevant is tailored and timeless skincare.

Healthy Lymph is Pretty Skin: On the Semiotics of Skin

I live most of my days around the Potomac River, between Northern Virginia and D.C. In this life I’ve gone further east than west. A few weeks ago a longtime client and I were chuckling over the fact that I was once in Jerusalem for a wedding but until recently I have never crossed over the Mississippi, “Has been to the the Dead Sea but never L.A.” my client - originally a Cali girl - observed teasingly.

This past November I finally went west of the Mississippi. I flew out to Denver, Colorado not to manifest a mythical destiny but to expand my expertise, returning from the suburb of Lakewood with an internationally accredited certification from the Cecily Braden Academy as a specialist in manual lymphatic drainage (MLD) of the face and neck.

I spent all last summer and a good chunk of last autumn studying for this week-long intensive followed by an hours long exam. The exam consisted of two parts: 1) a hand-written short answer portion covering history, theory, anatomy, physiology, and case study observations; no multiple choice. 2) a hands-on practical where we performed the classic MLD sequence under observation. Three students performed the full sequence on three other students as models and then we switched places.

My Lyft driver got lost on my first day so when I walked in class had already started but I nonetheless was greeted by glowing and smiling faces inside our classroom. The estheticians in last fall’s cohort were all so kind and intellectually generous. Everyday I was inspired to be around other like-minded practitioners who care about integrative and wholistic practices within their treatment rooms. Each esthetician had a unique story and path into esthetics which made for lively conversations plus valuable shared insights.

The Skin We’re In

Ashley Jo Press, a luminary in the world of wholistic esthetics, was my teacher for this intensive. I am lucky to have always had stand-out teachers at every life season and this certification was no exception.

On our first day she opened the lecture by noting that “the skin is the nervous system turned inside out.” I would return to this comment later during one of our first Q&A portions because I intuited there was more to explore and I wanted to go deeper. Even without explaining, what Ashley said made sense. Everything from blushing, to goosebumps, nervous sweating and other reactions indicate this as a common sense observation and yet, I’d never heard it articulated in such a succinctly evocative manner. What was the actual physiological connection?

Ashley went on to explain that in-utero, our skin and nervous system develop from the same fetal tissue known as the ectoderm, one of three primary embryonic tissues. INSANE. But also, MAKES SENSE. My brain lit up like a winning casino machine as suddenly other related connections from my early days of beauty school over a decade ago were foregrounded once again.

Back in my hotel room, during a study time tangent I revisited one of my favorite video playlists on the neuroscience of touch and how it connects to communicative processes. In a screen-driven world, tactility is diminished but this sense remains at the core of being alive and processing our experiences of aliveness.

From that train of thought, I made my way over to an article published by Penn State’s extension blog, Touch - Why We Need It, and found myself considering just how important consensual familial affection, safety affirming touch, and loving expressions are for longterm wellbeing. Care for the babies! Hug your kids! Hold hands with your friends! Cuddle with your pets! Wash your body with intention while reminding yourself that you are loved by you!

A Mini Journey into Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD)

It was back in 2012 that I first learned about the lymphatic system, how to support it, and its massive importance to immune function, metabolic function, and just about every other major process our cells undergo in their life cycle. It was also over a decade ago in beauty school where I studied with teachers who took traditional Chinese medicine and Indian Ayurvedic medicine seriously. From my trade school teachers who had studied other health traditions, I was gifted some introductory knowledge about interstitial fluid and would later revisit those gifts while studying with Ashley Jo in Colorado.

Interstitial fluid exists throughout the most granular spaces of the mammalian body, filling up the spaces within and between our organ tissues, spaces that many Western scientists long believed to be empty. Now they know better and have begun to language what other ancient health traditions have long observed: interstitial fluid acts like an organ itself and may very well be one. Today, in the West it’s called the interstitium and is being studied as a newly identified (possible) organ. I highly recommending listening to this fascinating podcast episode from NPR’s radio lab for more on the interstitium. This context is important because lymphatic fluid originates from within the interstitium.

When I was first in beauty school, mainstream Western science still considered it woo-woo-pseudoscience to claim that non-invasive manipulation of superficial lymphatic fluid could be supportive to whole body health. It was wacky to suggest activating the superficial lymph nodes through intentional and focused touch could unlock a host of positive whole body health results. Results like analgesic benefits, reduced inflammation, improved cognitive function, soothed vibrant skin, and better sleep. There were longtime exceptions to this resistance of course, like the Wittlinger Lymphedema Clinic in Austria which partners with the Dr. Vodder school.

I remember an esthetics teacher back then commenting about how many of her clients reported greater mental clarity in their day-to-day post facial. One client even started seeing her for weekly facials when she noticed that her persistent brain fog - a residual symptom of a previous traumatic brain injury - seemed to improve after every facial. What was my teacher doing in that facial? Vodder method manual lymphatic drainage of the superficial lymph nodes in the face and neck.

What’s the status of superficial lymphatic drainage in Western perspectives today?

Despite learning about the lymphatic system back in 2012, my true interest in lymphatic health was first peaked in the summer of 2023 while completing an esthetic oncology certification through Oncology Spa Solutions. We had to learn the placements of all lymphatic pathways since working with someone who’s had lymph nodes removed (especially common having had a mastectomy or lumpectomy) impacts whether or not we massage someone’s skin in a particular area, direction, and the kind of pressure used. This attention to lymphatics stayed with me and further deepening my understanding felt like the next right step in my evolution as a facialist.

Following up my esthetic oncology certification with studies at the Cecily Braden Academy after having first learned about lymphatics as a reluctant teen in beauty school - a full-circle intellectual homecoming.

The Body as a Conduit

In Colorado, during lunch one class day, I was struck by the following quote (middle picture above) that I saw printed on cards placed in the academy’s lobby:

Fast Fashion x Fast Beauty. The definition of fast skincare (fashion) is quickly producing inexpensive skincare (clothing) to meet rapidly changing trends. This approach prioritizes speed and cost efficiency, enabling retailers to bring new products (styles) to market in a matter of weeks rather than months.

In many ways, the professional practice of manual lymphatic drainage works antithetically to the demands of instant-gratification in our current world. Amidst an overculture obsessed with the speed of mass-produced experiences, Vodder method MLD is an oppositional service that requires slowness in order to deliver its benefits.

Rooted in esthetic craft and attention to physiological processes, the movements of Vodder method MLD are methodical, rhythmic, gentle, precise and intentionally patterned to stimulate the vagus nerve, a key pathway that regulates involuntary functions like breath, heart rate, and digestion.

Every facet of the Vodder method is directed towards calming the nervous system which is when optimal lymphatic flow can occur; progressive aesthetic results are prioritized over trendy superficial fixes. This methodology values the depth of each client’s unique physiological experience in the moment, which sets the stage for continued compounded benefits over the course of days after a session.

In class, during the practical portion of each day, we were always instructed to move our hands at the rate of the skin’s underlying tissue structure which varies from person to person - every face is unique. From this instruction, I began to conceptualize of MLD as a conversation with the body’s loose connective tissue. A peaceful conversation that brings extrinsic harmony to the face while nurturing a sense of vitality from within.

I also began to think of an MLD-focused facial as an experiential journey that gently leads to a process of softening into the self. This perspective arose from both giving and receiving the treatment everyday as part of training. Throughout the week it was exciting to note changes in my own body. Longtime personal pain points across my forehead and down along my upper trapezius were alleviated. I started my cycle the second day of class but for the first time in my life I experienced zero menstrual cramps. By the final day of class, even while still acclimating to a new altitude and the absurdly dry Colorado air, my skin looked brighter despite no new products being introduced. It should also be noted that Vodder method MLD is done on dry skin, so again, no new products were introduced to my skin during service, just intentionally light touch with technical precision along lymph-node pathways.

Inspired by our lectures and class conversations, in my notes from that certification week I wrote to myself that aging was a privilege, a process to work with and not against. In my notes I also reminded myself and marveled once again at how the body is a conduit of inherited, embodied, and studied knowledge. Knowledge that can only be accessed in states of calm, away from the noise of digital chatter, interpersonal expectations, and self-inflicted pressure.

With this all of this understanding, it’s my responsibility as someone’s facialist to facilitate a space of sanctuary. I do not know what they lived before arriving. I do not know what they will live after leaving. All I know is that during our time together, there’s the potential for them to feel safe inside their bodies as they tap into their built-in parasympathetic system for resting and digesting which supports longterm wellbeing.

What an honor to usher clients into a space that’s been attuned to unlocking their intrinsic potentiality. A little bit of pretty girl magic rooted in ancient methodologies, extolled by naturopathic practitioners, and now recognized by conventional science.

As soon as I returned from Colorado I began integrating everything I learned into offerings both at my employer’s location and at Ivana Martínez Studio. In just three months, the feedback from clients in both spaces has been resoundingly encouraging. It has been deeply satisfying to see the short-term results plus compounded benefits of continued MLD-centric treatments overtime with clients and I’m delighted that my studio's waitlist continues to grow in response to solid word-of-mouth.

Many estheticians are generalists when it comes to lymphatic drainage but only a handful of us are facialists who specialize in the classic Dr. Vodder method of manual lymphatic drainage. While still new to this, I’m proud to now belong in the latter group as the lineage of Vodder method trained wellness practitioners is a special one.

This January marks three years of my return to esthetics after having initially left the industry in 2018 to do college and experience other kinds of labor beyond the beauty space. Now, as I lay the transitional foundation for pivoting into my business full-time, I’ve been contemplating the kind of mind-set needed to engage ethically with the world as a business owner.

I say that it 100% soothes (which was important to me as my skin was reeling from windburn) and primes perfectly for optimal absorption of a moisturizer layered overtop. But it is not a classic moisturizer so it should not be used as a replacement for one. This would be better described as a serum-toner-primer with soothing anti-inflammatory and moisturizing properties.

Constant occlusion can be comedogenic (as in potentiates breakouts) so proper cleansing helps mitigate that. This cleanser will get everything off in one thorough go without stripping the skin. Remember: emulsify cleansers on your skin for a minimum of 60 seconds to ideally 90 seconds before rinsing off.

• Soft Services Carea Cream Daily Softening Body Lotion

  • I LOVE A YEAR ROUND TRAVEL ADAPTABLE BODY PRODUCT. This is one such body product. Works in all four Virginia seasons, works in the cold Colorado desert, works during an autumn vacation and then a summer vacation in different regions of Italy. I should have packed this for Puerto Rico and maybe I wouldn’t have gotten a heat rash.

  • Especially good for dry or bumpy body skin but can be used by all skin types. Also an excellent option for anyone managing keratosis pilaris.

Scent

One of my favorite autumn/winter activities is time travel.

The new moon in Scorpio through Winter solstice is when I am most prone to revisiting all that was. I remember everything. I return to my past and sit with her a little longer. It goes without saying, then, that this November into December my amygdala has been getting lots of mileage back and forth across the ether.

In other life seasons, photography, literature, music, or movies have been my preferred methods of transport. This year, fragrance has been my vehicle of choice and it’s proven to be a deliciously volatile accelerant through time.

Lately, I’ve been returning to September of this year. Specifically to LabSolue Perfume Laboratory’s Rome location. This perfumery operates as both a B2B and B2C entity which I think influenced the mind-shifting olfactive experience I had when visiting for the first time this past summer.

I’ve always been scent-oriented and come from a family of “sniffers.” My parents, my sisters, myself, we’re always pausing to smell in the kitchen while cooking, pausing to complement each other or our friends on how good their curls smell, pausing to pick outfits for the day that will only be complete after the appropriate complementary fragrance has been selected. Whenever I take my canine child out, we meander together because I want to smell the forest behind our house just as much as he does. Yet, despite all of this personal context, I’d never spent a considerable amount of time thinking critically about scent until visiting LabSolue and now I can’t stop.

In Rome, as we sniffed around the shop together, the lab guides walked me through the company’s matrix of sourcing, creating, and supplying their fragrances. They honored my request to talk to me in Italian as I was in the country for the purposes of immersion and whenever we hit a bump in communication they would clarify in English before switching back over to Italian. The in-shop experience was so engaging that I went back a second time the following day. My limbic system wanted more, who was I to deny it?

My favorite version of me exists back there, in Italy. She’s gazing out the window of a Trenitalia railway car somewhere between Sarzana and Rome. Ivana alone, bumbling around in a third language, a foreigner blissfully divorced from all cultural context, belonging nowhere, bound to no-one, with only five contacts in the whole country.

Perhaps because I have always felt like a stranger in the U.S. my “home” country, to spend time in an actual “foreign” country as a stranger comes naturally. When I returned to Italy for a third time this past September my foreign-ness fit like a tailor-made glove. Moving around as an outsider felt good and I loved who I became away from the familiarity of home: an Ivana who was braver, more observant, determined and kinetic, yet simultaneously leisurely.

Every time I adorn myself in Ambra Grigia, I call that version of me into the now. Transposing her out of my past and into my present. Transmuting myself into her future. Bit by bit until we inhabit the same corporeality.

Self alchemy, the only way to craft the life I want most. A process born out of equal parts necessity and desire.

Essence

Essence and spirit are often treated as synonyms but I consider essence to be the quality of a spirit. The spirit distilled. Whether talking about adding essences to a drink that uses spirits, or parsing through an overwhelming array of essences versus toners, rejecting gender essentialism, or leafing through esoterica, essence deserves its own consideration.

This December, as part of my private solstice celebration week, I took myself to DIY Scent Studio for the studio’s 2.5 hour Perfume Intro and Creation Class. This Virginia studio also offers open perfumery hours. While in class, I eavesdropped on a patron who was making his way through new materials the owner had sourced upon his request as he’d booked time to come in and blend some personalized Christmas gifts. How cool!

Before even touching the perfume organ, Sherry - one of the studio’s co-owners - took me through a historical overview of perfumery from what is known about ancient ritualistic practices using scent up through what is now understood about how human olfactory sensation works. She also offered some insights into the craft and chemistry of perfumery rooted in her own knowledge as a business person, student, and perfumer.

As Sherry spoke, she made a point to remind me of the Latin word perfume, meaning “through smoke.” This definition made its way to the forefront of my mind when it came time to conceptualize my own perfume blend as I imagined myself in a temple working with incense, crafting a series of sensorial offerings to a god named Life.

Offering is the name of my first blend. It’s playful yet weighty and warm opening with notes of bitter orange and anise that mellow out into sugar, then fig, before drying down to a base of caramel, tobacco, and cocoa. I loved it from the jump.

Reception is the name of my second blend and I approached its creation with the goal of blending a “light and distinctive” fragrance, but the result was something else entirely: an opening of black pepper layered over a middle note of cannabis before drying down into a base of smoke spice, rain, and wood incense. Sharp, severe, spicy, messy and unforgettable, all before softening into a curious whisper - kind of like life.

I am undecided about this latter fragrance much like how I am undecided about which adventures I want to craft for myself next in 2026. With Reception, the longer it lingers on my skin I am both enticed and repelled by what I created. Though not my original intention, perhaps the polarity means I succeeded? Unlike an offering which is one-directional in its orientation of service, isn’t the essence of a reception about the push-pull of give and take? When humans believed in gods, giving offerings was tradition but there was always uncertainty in whether or not the gods received said offerings with acceptance. Nonetheless, even with their reception in limbo, the offerings had to be made because the gods demanded it. Just as Life makes its demands.

Solstice

Whoever you are, no matter how lonely,
the world offers itself to your imagination,
calls to you like the wild geese, harsh and exciting
over and over announcing your place
in the family of things.

Winter Solstice delineates the transition from autumn to winter as the longest period of darkness within a 24-hour cycle. Every day after that, the light lingers a little longer until we wake up in spring.

Spring Equinox will bloom into Summer Solstice giving us the longest day of light in the year until bit by bit summer melts into Autumn Equinox and fall descends us into Winter Solstice once again.

The longest night gives way to the longest light with all the threads of our lives weaving themselves through seasonal portals along these cycles.

Where to next? Only way to find out is to sense through winter’s darkness. I’ll be sniffing my way through, smelling every proverbial rose, learning along the way how to embrace each thorn with my soft animal body.

La Misión: Puro Glow

Vanity Can be a Virtue

When micro-dosed it is a wonderful catalyst for consistency and consistency is the key to a successful routine.

On average, adult skin renews itself around 28 to 30-32 days. This is one of the reasons why I practice lunar living because adult human skin cycles through an infradian rhythm that aligns nicely with moon time.

I began to consciously skin-prep for Puerto Rico at the start of a New Moon on Thursday, July 24. This put me at three weeks before my sisters and I were going to see Benito at his Coliseo residency. My skin had to be clear, fresh, effervescent. I have a literal license to glow so there would be no excuses! It did not matter that my menstrual cycle was due to start while on this trip. I.Would.Win.

My skin prep was built around the fact that 1) skin is an organ and 2) my luteal phase would peak right before vacation. This meant that days before flying out my estrogen levels would be low and progesterone levels would be high which would increase the potential for inflammatory responses in my skin. With all of this in mind my skin prep began in the kitchen.

The gut-skin connection is a thing (first link is a medical journal here’s the tldr version). I eschewed eating foods that I knew would potentiate eczema or acne flares. I focused on eating in a manner that works for me when it comes to staying satiated and energized, with blood sugar levels steady most of the time. This was done fully knowing that it would all go out the window the minute my vacation started because indulgence can also be a virtue whereas constant circumscription is most definitely a sin.

I Did Not Try Any New Products in the Lead Up

Remember fellow Newsletter Hottie: when prepping for an important event the time to figure out new products and tweak a routine is ideally six months prior to the event. Why? Because it can take between a day and two weeks to make sure a product is not negatively affecting the skin. Once that has been established it takes about three skin cycles to see results from a tailored routine.

By the time you are three months out from your event, you want to be locked into a routine flow with some wiggle room for adjusting as needed yes, but you do not want to still be figuring out the main formula. After that, what matters is consistency over perfection.

Now if it’s a wedding and you’re the one getting married then six months is the minimum to start prepping but ideally that prep has begun 12 to 18 months out. Factoring in both tailored home-care and consistent professional treatments.

My Product List

As of this writing, my routine had been adapted to the transition from autumn to winter. Plus, I am now testing out new products for my private studio’s backbar so my current product list has been switched up. What follows is the core of my routine product line-up in the weeks leading up to Puerto Rico this past summer.

While the conscious prepping began one moon-cycle out from vacation, the foundation had already been set for sometime so that the core of my routine was on auto-pilot. This framework is the foundational skeleton of my routine year round and I switch out products as needed while keeping the foundation.

My rotation of actives for skin-cycling:

• Differin (Adaplene) Gel 0.1% - over the counter.

  • Every client of mine starting a retinoid journey gets the above “skin-cycling” link sent to them in a follow-up email. What I’m saying is, if you’re remotely curious about incorporating a retinoid into your nighttime routine you need the above link. Bookmark it. You’re welcome.

• Perfect Derma’s Perfect B Brightening Complex.

  • Low dose hydroquinone I was using under medical supervision. I have since switched over from hydroquinone to tranexamic acid as the former is not recommended for longterm use when managing hyperpigmentation.

• Goldfaden MD Fresh-a-Peel or Skinbetter Science AlphaRet Exfoliating Peel Pads

Daytime basics for cleansing, extrinsic delivery of antioxidants to the skin, and protection from UV-damage:

• Cleanse with Dermalogica’s Ultra Calming Cleanser after coming in from walking my Scorpio Son (pun-intended and my son is a canine). Or, Dr. Loretta’s Gentle Hydrating Cleanser if I was sweaty from a morning workout.

• Indie Lee CoQ10 Toner

• Skinbetter Science Alto Defense Serum

• Black Girl Sunscreen SPF 30. This sunscreen is so good that I have clients of different backgrounds using it.

Nighttime double cleanse, antioxidants for overnight repair, moisturizer basics:

• First cleanse, oil based. I have a few cleansers that I like to use based on how grimy my skin is from the day’s activities, how much SPF I have reapplied throughout the day, whatever conditions I may be managing at the moment (if any), and going by the how my skin is looking/feeling; skin talks and I interpret it.

  • One Love Organics Botanical B Cleansing Oil, Mara Algae Enzyme Cleansing Oil, Pai Lightwork Cleanser, Every Mood Botanical Cleansing Oil from IN GROOV (Shani Hillian is on my bucket list of estheticians to get a facial with!).

• Second cleanse, water based. Based on the same selection criteria as above and if I am going to follow up with an active or not.

  • Same daytime options plus the CeraVe Hydrating Facial Cleanser, Prequel Glycerin Cleanser, Prequel Salicylic Cleanser, Image Restoring Facial Cleanser.

• Indie Lee CoQ10 Toner (on non-active night).

• Skinbetter Science Alto Defense Serum (on non-active night).

• Avene Xeracalm Lipid-replenishing Balm (creamy consistency despite the name) or Dieux Skin Instant Angel (a stateside brand that is so values aligned I’m obsessed).

While none of my day or night variations go beyond five steps, sometimes I deal with la depre plus comorbidities and can’t be bothered with all of the above.

In those moments my baseline nighttime routine is two steps:

• Oil cleanser

  • Massaged in for two minutes, emulsified for two minutes, and a warm towel over my face for one minute before wiping it all off.

  • The intentional massage is grounding and is a way to communicate to myself that I will be ok even if I don’t believe it in that moment.

  • Deep breathing under the darkness of the towel feels good, like a mini-therapeutic sensory deprivation session. And no, five minutes is not a longtime, click here to see the light on cleansing right.

• Avene Xeracalm Lipid-replenishing Balm

Baseline daytime routine, also two steps:

• Splash with cold water - to feel something, anything!

• Black Girl Sunscreen SPF 30

I stay at baseline until I remember that the more effort I give myself the better I feel.

Key-word is Intentional

I stopped exfoliating and using a retinoid two weeks before flying in preparation for going all in with a double exfoliation one week before flying out. Because I am eczema-prone, my skin is easily sensitized so I stopped a week before I planned to dermaplane and chemically exfoliate once again with my usual lactic acid + fruit enzyme blend.

As established above, I knew that a week before flying out I wanted to dermaplane myself then do a no-downtime chemical exfoliation right after. Dermaplaning right before a chemical exfoliation leads to maximum absorption and optimal resurfacing but it can also lead to irritation so I was intentional about stopping retinoid usage a week beforehand which means I stopped my retinoid and exfoliant for a total of two weeks before Puerto Rico. Whether it is three days, five days, one week, or two weeks prior, per your skin’s tolerance stop all actives before doing a double exfoliation. Otherwise, your face may fall off.

I was on day two of menstruating when I landed but my skin was calm and the Caribbean light was bouncing off of me as if I were a disco ball.

Eat well, hydrate, sleep (sort of) decently, consistent skincare routine, repeat = I WON.

How to Survive a Heat Rash

I was winning until I wasn’t.

Hubris was to blame.

Four days in, I began to sense that my skin was on the verge of a nervous breakdown. After reviewing my daily skincare tracker and doing some cursory research as to possible contributing factors, I accepted defeat.

A heat rash had befallen me. The climate was having its way my skin. My ego in shambles, I asked the Island, “is this your way of calling me gringa?”

I say hubris was to blame because in my confidence with skin-prep before the trip, I forgot all about accounting for skin-adaptation during said trip. I made a rookie travel mistake and brought all of my products chosen for heat of the Mid-Atlantic. Nothing was packed with consideration to Caribbean heat. I’ve had a passport since middle school and I’m a licensed master esthetician, I knew better!

Another major mistake was made: over reliance on face wipes one too many times instead of a proper evening cleanse. *Cries in Human Error.* While researching, I also learned that hormonal changes - like experiencing one’s period - can also lead to a heat rash. That’s the kind of information that should be included in a womb-owner’s manual.

Once I figured out what was going on, a quick trip to a drugstore down the strip of Condado beach resulted in some quality finds for clearing, calming, and soothing my skin. Pictured below is everything that worked to calm things down.

Funnily enough, while the hyaluronic acid serum’s cosmetic formulation was perfect for keeping me lightly moisturized without suffocating my skin in Puerto Rico, as soon as I was back in Virginia it did nothing for me. Similarly with the arnica gel - which I applied to my skin first (before the serum) after a quick gentle wash-down with the SA Cleanser Bar - the gel was perfect for the island climate, yet as soon as I was stateside it felt tacky and would pill on my skin. Skincare too, is informed by geography, climate, and seasonality!

Below I will highlight my top seven experiences from eating and drinking around San Juan. These locations came from meticulously combing through Alicia Kennedy’s archives and maps, recommendations from my own contacts on the island, and recommendations that my sisters scoped out personally.

Some of the best meals I’ve had all year were in San Juan; as 2025 wraps up, I am still reminiscing over them. Links for every spot embedded in location names.

Pío Pío

151 Calle de San Francisco, San Juan, PR 00901 - in Viejo San Juan.

Starting with our first night over dinner at Pío-Pío where I was ready to shed tears over how delightful everything was, from the wine to the food and the service. Was the food that good or was I just googly-eyed over the waitress who mentioned an interest in somellier studies? Both! She was so charming that we were roped into the a full-course tasting plus drink-pairing menu before we’d even been fully seated.

Every bite was unique, flavorful, seasonal, and locally sourced. I somehow managed to take decent pictures of our drinks but not our food, though trust when I say, each plate was 1000/10. My absolute favorite was the crudo, a zingy mix of watermelon, mezcal, aguachile, cucumbers, and salsa macha. In my realtime notes from the dinner I wrote, “I could eat a whole bowl of whatever we just had.” It was the crudo.

Café Regina

I will always remember Café Regina for three things.

1. An unexpectedly heavy “Madre Patría” presence. When we first stepped into the café, we were overwhelmed by a wave of Castellano which threw me for a loop. Where were the blended Circum-Caribbean inflections, the Rs pronounced as Ls, and the aspirated Ss? I turned to one of my sisters and wondered out loud why everyone looked and sounded like they were fresh off a boat from Spain. Turns out, many of them were in fact freshly arrived from Spain. That was not on my bingo card! It’s like spotting French tourists in Haiti. It will never not be silly.

2. My first real celebrity sighting! I saw Paopao duck into the shop and make a phone call while shiftily waiting for what I assume was her ride to whisk her away from us plebeians. Casí perdí la cordura, to the point where my sisters wondered if I was ok. But everyone in the shop seemed unfazed by Paopao’s presence so I calmed myself and played along. I later messaged a friend who is from the island and she confirmed that considering we were in Condado, I probably did see who I thought I saw. ELATION.

3. A robust cortado and a scrumptious calabacín sandwich. My verbatim note-to-self from Café Regina, “I need to know the mayo or butter(?), or whatever spread was used on this bread.”

Café con C

1765 Calle Loíza, San Juan, PR 00911 - there is another location on Calle Cerra also in San Juan.

A couple blocks further down Calle Loíza, this spot is cozy reprieve from the fluorescently-lit intensity of Café Regina. There’s a fun community wall that gives a run-down of every artsy event going on in San Juan, along with cute sketches and love-notes left by patrons. There’s also a vending machine outside of the café where instead of snacks or drinks for sale, there’s prints from local artists! The neighborhood cats also like to lounge there and that gives a business a special kind of legitimacy when it’s frequented mainly by locals and street cats instead of tourists and tax-evaders.

Wild Culture Mushrooms

1054 Ave Ponce de Leon, San Juan PR 00907 - this is Santurce, there’s also an Aguada location.

I am by no means a mycophile but I do consider myself to be mushroom-lover adjacent for several reasons. Two wonderful friends of mine are into all things mycelial and I’ve learned a lot from them by osmosis. Once, while wandering with Rey (aforementioned canine child) I happened upon chicken of the woods and another time I crossed paths with wood ear! I made nuggets out of the first forage and a gravy with the second for a sandwich. Finally, I prefer psilocybin over Vyvanse for collaborating with ADHD - yes collaborate.

All of this is context for why I was transfixed when we stumbled upon this shop while walking around after lunch at Leña Eh (included in this list too).

The design is very Willy-Wonka if he was into mushrooms over chocolate. All coffees, teas, and pastries are infused with mushroom tinctures! Wild Culture Mushrooms also has a token street cat that the staff cares for.

Aside from the novelty of it all, the coffee goes done smoothly with a rich flavor profile. I recommend the chagaccino, a myco-latte of espresso, cacao, and chaga mushroom.

Leña Eh

First, a moment for the setting: location, location, location!

Lunch at this food-truck and dinner at Los Chamos (listed below) were my favorite meals of the whole week. Similar to my experience in Richmond, this meal in Miramar had me thinking about what I referred to in Richmond as an “abundance of refusal.” There’s so much culinary creativity to be enjoyed when meat isn’t hogging the show and this meal at Leña Eh was a perfect example of that. Berenjena asada y garbanzos con arroz, simple yet vibrant, smokey and seasoned. MORE PLEASE.

Chef Rubén Guzman, a recent James Beard Award semifinalist, was in his element orchestrating this dish and it was fun to observe while we waited.

Los Chamos Arepas

From the music of Rawayana, to Juan Carlos López Quintero (lead curator at Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico), to Los Chamos and more, Venezuela está PRESENTE en PR. Pictured below: cachapa con platáno, queso fresco, caraotas negras, aguacate, salsa verde, y salsa de ajo. Not pictured but definitely enjoyed, tequeños de queso y guayaba. Highly recommend getting those too.

Hermanos Lucca

322 Ave. Jose de Diego, Santurce, Puerto Rico

Both Pío-Pío and Hermanos Lucca are featured in this culture piece from Wine Enthusiast which made its way into my research as our itinerary was taking shape. After a long day all around the city, this natural wine bar was the perfect place to settle into for a cozy tapas style meal with a solid bottle of red from La Morella.

De la Calle a la Gallería

There are two kinds of tourists, those who go for the photo-op and those who go to disappear. I love a good photo as much as the next chronically online babe but I also love to disappear.

It helps to speak the predominant language without a traceable Anglo-American accent. Even better to be a fluent heritage speaker who is visibly Black. Beyond the Anglo-American bubble, people show their true colors when they read you as Black and assume that you could be from anywhere except Anglo-America. Disappearing this way, into the fabric of a place even momentarily makes for memorable eavesdropping.

During our second visit to Café Regina, my sisters and I were seated next to two Galician gals and two Chicago bros. We seemed to have arrived in the middle of what had already been a long conversation. The midwestern bros joked about wanting to hire the women for Spanish lessons and the españolas giggled profusely as they commented back about how it felt like they’d already known each other for years despite only just meeting. As we settled next to them at an open table we asked them in Spanish if the leftover plates at the table were theirs to which they said no and carried on in English with the bros occasionally showcasing what they remembered from their high school Spanish days. A showcase which the women seemed to find endearing no matter how grating.

The conversation continued on with complaints about how boring Puerto Rico was after having seen Bad Bunny earlier in the week. The Chicago bros couldn’t figure out what else to do on this island that wasn’t living up to all its hype. One Galician suggested El Yunque, the other reminded them that there’s so many beautiful beaches in PR, one of the bros replied that Ibiza (heavy on the IbiTHa) was better for sure and that they should all go together, the women laughed.

Their boredom with Puerto Rico now that Bad Bunny was no longer entertaining them gave way to complaints about other places that had left them disappointed. Paris for example, according to one of the Spaniards, had been too rough for her. Too many immigrants, too many homeless people, no one is actually French in France anymore she lamented. Chicago bro said that New York was exactly the same, no one in New York is actually from New York and it’s gotten too international. Chicago was still beautiful though, if one knows where to go, and San Diego too, it hasn't been overrun by the wrong kind of people yet.

One Galician gal commented that she’d never been to Chicago or San Diego (where one of the bros travels to regularly for business), to which the bros replied they should all get in a group chat and start planning. The women could show them around their Galician hometowns and then they’d all go to Madrid (where the Galicianas are now based) before hitting up Ibiza. In return, the Galician gals could visit Chicago and the bros would show them around the U.S. - but only the good parts, so it would be a short trip.

Finished with our lunch, I got up to drop off our plates while my sisters gathered their things. As I returned to our shared table another friend of the bros had walked up and was pulling my seat away before realizing that I’d been there, with his ear-curdling Spanish he tried to ascertain if that was still my seat, confirming what I’d assumed, that they hadn’t registered us as English speakers. Mission accomplished, we’d heard the real them in all their ugliness.

Their conversation echoed in my mind while I made my way through Mar Adentro/Out to Sea, an exhibit at Puerto Rico’s Museum of Contemporary Art (MAC). It was as though the vestiges of Spanish colonialism and the spirit of ongoing American imperialism had possessed them while they fell into lust with each other over un buen cafecito. But they were not possessed, that’s simply who they were. Four individuals raised on opposite sides of the Atlantic yet still able to bond over a shared lack of imagination, entitlement, and a simple-minded view of the world.

Livin’la Vida Liminal

How unfortunate that the linear concept of time is the default when teaching classroom history. History is not a series of sequential events that happened with a beginning, middle, and end. History is always happening. It unfolds, overlaps, circles back, rebounds, and reflects. Current events are patterns. The state of the world is a call and response. The news is a reckoning.

Ball and chained to the United States while simultaneously adrift in centuries of continued extraction, Puerto Rico is one of those places where the wounds of history unfold in realtime and in plain sight.

The wound is present in learning from Puerto Rico Plural - an exhibit at el Museo de Art de Puerto Rico (MAPR) - that the aging descendants of Puerto Rico’s dwindling yet powerful Criollo class were complicit in building out the foundation for the island’s colonial limbo today.

The wound is present in how the cashier at the museum gift shop tells us her thoughts on the aforementioned exhibit, “Puerto Rico tiene que levantarse…” her tone equal parts assertive and wistful.

The wound is present in conversation with visibly Afro-descendant Puerto Ricans who make a point to distance themselves from belonging to a Black diaspora.

The wound is present when a white security guard at el Choli giggles while enthusiastically running her hands through my sisters’ hair and then my own as she claims it is to make sure we are not hiding anything in our hair. She then says, “Mi hijo también se molesta cuando le toco su afro.” This was not our first time at el Choli but it was our first time encountering this additional layer of so-called security. We noticed that others who were not visibly black but had varying degrees of much longer and thicker textured hair were not patted down.

The wound is present in walking by whole swaths of San Juan up for sale at prices tailored to tax-evading plutocrats.

The wound is present in the irony of our bed and breakfast host having to rely on Tesla generators because the Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority (PREPA) is a joke.

The wound is present in how our guide at San Juan Artisan Distillers explained the logistical minefield of selling their sumptuously crafted rum outside of the island while being mired in doublespeak policies for doing business from inside an “Associated Free State.”

But maybe from within the wound there is also medicine. The longer I observed the social spaces around me, I could sense a potentiality for another kind of world on the island. These glimmers were especially potent outside of San Juan. As we visited Vega Alta and then drove into Vega Baja, I was reminded of the following three passages from Naomi Klein’s The Battle for Paradise: Puerto Rico Takes on the Disaster Capitalists.

But there is a flip side to these painful revelations. Puerto Ricans now know, beyond any shadow of a doubt, that there is no government that has their interests at heart, not in the governor’s mansion, not on the unelected fiscal control board (which many Puerto Ricans welcomed at first, convinced it would root out corruption), and certainly not in Washington…

Mónica Flores, a graduate student in environmental sciences at the University of of Puerto Rico who has been working with communities on renewable energy projects, told me that truly democratic resource management is the island’s best hope. People need to have a sense, she said, “that this is our energy. This is our water, and this is how we manage it because we believe in this process, and we respect our culture, our nature, everything that is supporting us.”

And many Puerto Ricans have also been building their future world in miniature, on those islands of sovereignty hidden throughout the territory…Elizabeth Yeampierre, who attended the Mariana summit, believes that despite all the devastation being visited on Puerto Rico, her people have the fortitude for the battles ahead. “I see a level of resistance and support that I didn’t imagine was going to be possible,” she said. “And it reminds me that these are the descendants of colonization and slavery, and they are strong.”

America América

Because of the community that I grew-up in, my geo-political consciousness has always been oriented southward towards América Latina. While I was born and raised in Virginia, what makes me truly southern is that all my roots stretch deep into the Global South. Those roots weave towards Venezuela, Panamá, Jamaica, and Barbados. They loop up into Southern Europe, and down to North Africa, rooting through West Africa and weaving back around to the Circum-Caribbean. My North-South/South-South orientation is immune to the straitjacket of nationhood. I belong to the world.

All my life I have seen the imprint of hemispheric history around me, at church, at school, at the grocery store and more. All my life I have been perplexed by the disconnect between these two worlds, the multilingual world of my Virginia upbringing, where it is so clear that the entire fate of this region is inextricably linked, and the monolingual Anglo-world of the United States. A sphere where the proverbial chickens of imperialism are always coming home to roost in all kinds of ways yet most Americans are seemingly unaware. As though our present doesn’t link back to centuries of plunder that pre-date 1776. As though current waves of migration are not directly linked to ongoing practices of material extraction and labor abuse. As though the criminal failure in response to Katrina did not foreshadow the criminal failure in response to María which was then repeated during Helene. As though, as though, as though. The mirroring is unending.

This imprint was with me everyday in Puerto Rico. I felt its shadow on the streets, in restaurants, and in gallery corridors. It both haunted and guided me, as this kind of knowing tends to do. Like gazing at an oil painting and being able to see the umber wash laid as the canvas’ underpainting, along with all the subsequent layers of illusion brushed overtop.

Reader’s Delight

Most people don’t go into facials asking about reading recommendations. Unless I’m their facialist and they’re a regular to the treatment room. As a recovering almost-academic with a penchant for pretty things, at any given time my reading list is a literary magpie’s dream.

Below is what I’ve read lately (along with what I’m currently reading) that’s running through my mind as I roll towels and prep products for my weekend round of clients.

But First, a Tangent.

This rose has absolutely nothing to do with reading…until one thinks about all the ways that exist to read a rose. A rose can be read through sight, through scent, through touch (watch out for the thorns!), through memory (what I’m doing right now in this newsletter), and even through taste…thinking of this scene in the original adaptation of Como agua para chocolate.

I saw her today when I went to get the mail and just had to stand with her for a moment. Blooming through November winds, chilly mornings, and even colder nights, she persists!

Currently Reading: Books

• Passing Strange by Ellen Klages, a sci-fi/fantasy blend that takes place in 1940s San Francisco. Features a spell for time travel, pulp-noir vibes, and women on the run who fall in love.

  • I facilitate a Sapphic Sunday Book Club at Friends to Lovers Bookstore, this is our November read.

• The House of Beauty: Lessons from the Image Industry, by Arabelle Sicardi. This is a non-fiction deep dive into the fascinating socio-political connections, histories, and implications that weigh on beauty as a cultural practice on a global scale.

  • In an ADHD (diagnosed!) tragedy, I misplaced my hard copy of this book three years ago during a move and have since been returning to this text via a bootlegged pdf that I have saved from my college days.

  • I am currently reviewing sections of Federici’s classic work for the same reason that I’m re-reading Glissant, to write a long-form newsletter that weaves together skincare, island vacations, and observations on patterns of capitalist extraction.

  • WOW. Just wow. Imagine being able to write in a way that the reader feels like they can smell every top, middle, and base note through a screen. This is power.

• When Injectables Go Wrong and Why Dissolving Might be the Reset You Need, by Sara Kitnick for the LA Times

  • Sonia Vargas, an esthetician who is on my bucket list of experts to one day see and learn from, was interviewed for this piece.

• Getting Real About Injectables, by Fedora Abu for Late Filing

  • I’m new to Fedora’s writing and I am OBSESSED.

  • This piece pairs well with the previous LA Times article as a counterpoint. Being able to sit with multiple perspectives around a subject is a good form of brain exercise. Fedora’s anecdotal and journalistic experience makes for a refreshing take on what is often a hackneyed conversation around injectables.

  • In my line of work, many estheticians fall along a binary whenever their clients ask them about neuro-modulators and fillers. Estheticians DO NOT inject (very much beyond our scope) but we are often working adjacent to dermatologists, cosmetic surgeons, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners who are all professionals that do inject. Some of my peers are all for it (ie: the medspa girlies), others are staunchly against it (ie: the wholistic babes). Some of us are more integrative in how we view cosmetic medicine, I belong to this third grouping.

  • I see injectables as creative tools. Like any such tool some people approach body modification conservatively and with artful techniques; others have no good sense and suffer from the curse of bad taste. Additionally, often missing from the conversation around injectables is that these tools are not just used out of vanity. Botox can be used for pain management and incontinence. Filler can have reconstructive purposes after undergoing cancer treatment or traumatic injuries. Scarring from a traumatic injury is the reason I first went in for filler over a year ago. It was one of the best investments I’d ever made. I went in with unfiltered pictures of myself before my accident as points of reference and left looking like me again.

  • I have this bookmarked partly out of fandom and partly out of research as I’m working on a piece about the aestheticism of sapphic desire in contemporary pop music.

The Place

It’s getting cold out here in Turtle Island’s Mid-Atlantic sphere. Winter is coming and sometimes one just has to get away. However, take note before booking: Airbnb is so passé. There are far better options than contributing to a model that hollows out entire communities and profiteers off of human right’s violations.

Leave that basic 1492 behavior back in 1492.

Step outside the short-term rental matrix!

Develop good taste and travel in style!

Like I said, there are far better options.

One such option is Casa Isabel, a woman-owned bed and breakfast located in a picturesque beachside corner of Condado, a district of Santurce in San Juan. I happened upon this gorgeous 1930s Spanish Revival home while scoping out the Puerto Rico Bed & Breakfast Association which I of course have bookmarked because I am a proud bed and breakfast obsessive.

The Vibe

Margie is the owner of Casa Isabel and her vivacity touches every corner of the house. She is the kind of person that I meet and immediately wish to welcome in as a client to my treatment room because of the captivating energy that flows out of her spirit. During our visit this past August my sisters and I were gagged to the gods when we learned that she was twenty years older than we assumed. That’s how kinetic and vibrant she is!

Around ten years ago, Margie’s tía-abuela left the house to her on a whim. Lucky for all conscious travelers with good taste, Margie’s nephew convinced her to turn it into a bed and breakfast instead of selling.

The bed and breakfast is lovely. Common spaces are flooded with natural light. Guest rooms are airy yet also cozy without being stuffy.

A bonus of the location is that Spanish is spoken up and down the street como Dios manda. The neighborhood is balanced between locals and a smattering of tourists which is a miracle given that Condado is a go-to for resort seekers. This balance was perfect during my stay because when traveling I prioritize getting as close as possible to disappearing into a location and it’s harder to do that when everyone who is actually from there has been priced-out into a literal exodus.

One of my favorite parts of travel is the opportunity to observe how social productions of space occur in the places I’m visiting. Tuning in to that sociological vibe is the key to crossing out of tourist mode into traveler mode and, if one is lucky, gets mistaken for resident mode.

Given that this is my measure for a time well-traveled, how close I can get to disappearing into a place, there’s no one better to learn from than actual locals. Digital Nomad Nathan and Bitcoin Becky could never.

The Undercurrent

All of the above having been said, the incongruity of my lamenting residents being priced-out of an area that I’ve just vacationed in is not lost on me. During my visit I journaled to myself, “Condado dazzles with island glamour. 10/10 will come back. But also, there’s layers here. What’s beneath?”

I saw one of those layers peeled back in real time when a few days after that journal entry my sisters and I were strolling down Calle Loíza. It’s the kind of street that I refer to as a heartbeat street, a sort of cultural artery where travelers can sense into the pulse of a new place simply by walking and paying attention.

On our stroll we passed by Taller Comunidad La Goyco, a multi-function community workshop a few blocks round the corner from Casa Isabel. Right along the workshop’s open gates there was a flyer announcing in uppercase print, “NO TODOS SOMOS TURISTAS. AQUÍ VIVE GENTE. ¡LA GENTE SE RESPETA!”

Whoever wrote that, effectively screaming at the top of their lungs through print, tiene toda la razón.

The Breakfasts

A week at Casa Isabel equals a week of being well-fed.

Fiber! Helps level out glucose and keeps the colon in check.

Coffee was made fresh every morning. All juices were freshly pressed. Eggs and sausages were cooked to order by Ariana who was so warm and attentive as la casa’s go-to for all of our daily hospitality needs.

The Views

Casa Isabel is located in a pedestrian friendly locality with plenty of quotidian gems to contemplate while strolling about. A mini community garden, street art, coffee shop cats, chill chickens (A first for me! By contrast my neighbor’s chickens are drama queens.) and cute Puerto Rican pollinators dedicated to pollinating Puerto Rico con mucho mucho amor.

When stepping out of Casa Isabel, take a few paces down to the left and there’s a corner store stocked with everything needed for everyday frolicking as just another Condado babe. One can grab basic groceries, munchies and wine for later, re-up on haircare, find a whole new skincare routine, and put together a first-aid kit all with items from that store. La casa is also within walking distance to several solid spots for coffee, lunch, and dinner; all of which I will be detailing in a forthcoming travelogue.

The Beach! Out of respect for the fact that this particular slice of playa was not teaming with tourists when we went, I will not mention exactly where this is. Just know that it is reachable by foot from Casa Isabel though it is not where one may initially think to go.

Leaving la casa, take a right and then a left at the main intersection. Keep walking until it feels like you’re lost. You will pass a pilates studio to your left and then a burger joint on your right. Take that right and keep going past the residential gates. When it looks like a dead-end make a left onto a path that disappears behind a dense collection of palmeras. Keep going until the water calls out to you. Llegaste.

About Me, Ivana.

I am a licensed and working master esthetician. At Ivana Martínez Studio - located just outside of Washington D.C. - I craft bespoke facial treatments where science, soul, and beauty intersect. With over a decade of experience from within and outside of the aesthetics industry, below are exhibits A, B, and C of my license to glow.

The Brain Behind the Writing

My writer’s brain has had quite the journey. I first worked as an assistant at a casting company before going to beauty school and training in esthetics. After passing state board exams, I grew into my esthetic skill set at a resort spa in Virginia’s wine country before further expanding my technical knowledge at a wellness club near Washington D.C. Sometime later, I enrolled at Hollins University, graduating with a B.A. in Spanish (honors included), a minor in film, a certificate in leadership studies from the Batten Leadership Institute, and came away with an Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award.

I then found myself in a Masters to PhD pipeline inside the Spanish, Italian, and Portuguese department at the University of Virginia. At UVA I explored life as a humanities researcher; thinking critically through Caribbean literature, art, and culture with a special interest in the early-modern period.

Despite wanting to drink the institutional kool-aid, I quickly realized that while I loved learning, researching, traveling, making connections, and sharing that knowledge, I did not enjoy doing all that as a career within the structure of academia.

After becoming a PhD drop-out, I managed to spin my background into a solid pitch for a job in public relations. I spent some time in the world of strategic communications at a socially-minded firm before goldilocks-ing my way out of that.

Pivoting Back into Beauty

One night, under a new moon in Sagittarius I asked myself, “What do I want most out of the labor that I choose to do within capitalism?”

I wanted four things from my labor:

1) Work that was simultaneously cerebral and embodied.

2) A career where I could celebrate my own light and the light within others.

3) Alignment with my values while clocked-in and alignment with my varied interests while clocked-out.

4) A system of production that required me to take care of myself outside of it so that I could offer excellence of service within it. Too many jobs reward self-abandonment. I was interested in creating a positive feedback loop between my personal and professional life, one that necessitated self-presence.

I looked at my list and realized that if I paired my license in esthetics with lessons from the life I’d lived beyond esthetics, I could achieve all of the above from inside the treatment room as an esthetician and from far beyond the treatment room as a proud aesthete. So everything came full circle!

Because I am good at what I do, many of my clients ask me if I am passionate about my work as a facialist. My true passion is living and I genuinely believe that the cultivation of a beautiful life is a worthwhile endeavor even with the world on fire.

My Gaze

In my practice as an esthetician I see in real time how beauty culture shapes the ongoing refashioning of the self from birth to grave.

As a reader, writer, and forever student of the world, I see beauty culture itself as mutable. Beauty culture is subject to time, geography, politics, collective survival, and competing visions of the world we all share.

What holds our attention as “beautiful” reflects back to us our beliefs, our history, our conscious aspirations, and unconscious desires.

Every newsletter is crafted with intention. I work with written language as a medium unto itself. I invest in ongoing education and mentorship with established professionals from across disciplines as part of my writing process. I read widely and research carefully. Bologna, Italia - lunedì, 27 giugno, 2022

The first time I saw her, I was jet-lagged, deliriously hungry, and excited to be outside of the United States.

Prior to seeing her, I had taken a wrong turn off of Via Castiglione before a group of New England girlies guided me to my destination.

I was assessing pedestrians around me for approachability to get directions when the ladies caught my attention. They were boisterously speaking English but were not poorly styled like standard American tourists. Nor were they glued to maps on their phones or taking pictures without spatial awareness of others. Two more indicators that they weren’t typical tourists.

Plus, there was something ineffable about the way these women carried themselves and this something belied that no-one in the gang cared much for heteronormativity.

There go my people. I approached, “Are ya’ll fruity or just really cool?”

“Both!” All four of them replied gleefully before someone said “Jinx!” and everyone giggled.

The Academy of Global Humanities and Critical Theory (a now defunct collaboration between the University of Virginia, Duke University, and the University of Bologna) was holding its welcome reception for early-career scholars in attendance. I - being one of those scholars - was lost and late. Very Ivana™.

Lucky for me, my New England angels had been in Bologna for over a year and knew exactly where I wanted to go. They ushered me to the reception hall before going on their way and basically brought me right to her, another human who emanated that same ineffable freedom from straightness. I could sense it from across the room.

The welcome reception was casual. Other researchers, lecturers, and general guests moved between their small circles of polite chatter and a well stocked buffet, all while the welcome speaker made general remarks.

She was seated alone, frowning up at the welcome speaker then down to her notes. Occasionally biting her nails in-between note taking, or tapping her feet, she was deep in concentration and clearly not to be bothered.

My stomach reminded me that I was in a body, it willed me to turn my gaze from her and move towards the food. I glanced at her once more and prayed to Sappho that we’d have class together.

By the end of that first Tuesday I saw that we did not have any small group classes together. Though we were in the same room during the general morning symposium where all graduate scholars gathered for the first ninety minutes of each day.

That first morning of the general daily symposium I had assigned myself a seat in the front row. This was good for focusing on the scholarly matters at hand but was unideal for pining. However that did not stop me from craning my neck all the way around when during general introductions I heard a richly husky and warm voice introduce itself in halted English. The voice was hers.

Later that night I would journal to myself that it was for the best we didn’t share any classes together. I was in Italy to refine my possible methodologies of research and to network with potential mentors. My completed prefrontal cortex was still in the infancy of true adulthood, the last thing it needed was to be distracted by someone who sounded like honey.

Class ran from 8:30 to 14:30 and was out for the day.

I had just parted ways with a new friend who was taking the train home to Modena.

Rounding a corner away from where my friend and I had parted, I walked down some steps and almost fell into her as she walked up the steps in my direction.

Her name rolled out of me as if I’d always been saying it, emphasized at the right vowels, all consonants correctly enunciated. She smiled up at me and responded with “Sì” before assuming - I suppose - that such an affirmative is not almost universally understood, so she switched to “Ehh, Yes.”

We moved back down the steps together so we were now leveled looking at each other. I told her my name and said I was in the same program as her, “I know” was her reply. I asked where she was from and upon learning she was from Genova I made a bad joke about Columbus which thankfully went over her head.

As I saw my joke not landing anywhere on either side of funny/not funny I realized just how limited her English was. I played my only wild card, “Parli spagnolo?” Her body language shifted. She went from looking curious but guarded to open and fully present. It turned out that while her family was Italian, she had spent some formative years in Colombia so not only did she “parla spagnolo,” she was fluent!

She mentioned missing everything about her time in Colombia, especially the arepas. I told her Venezuelan arepas were better and that I knew how to make them. That made her laugh and she seemed intrigued. I went from blubbering with her in English to connecting with her in Spanish. I was expressing myself in the language of all my emotions, she was expressing herself in the language of her nostalgia.

Sappho works in mysterious ways. A match had been lit.

Insieme

I asked her where she was going and what she was doing the rest of the afternoon. She had no plans other than exploring the city. She had never wandered around Bologna before and wanted to get a feel for the place before classes and research picked up. I asked if I could join her in exploring, she lit up “¡Por supuesto!” Now we were in business.

We hit the streets. Walking and talking. Our strolling rhythms were is sync.

She told me about her readings of bell hooks in translation, I told her about my readings of Monique Wittig. We talked about decoloniality and the fungibility of borders; what dialoguing across difference actually meant to us as social practice and not just as performative posturing within the academy.

Depending on where we were walking to next, she would always orient herself on the outside of the sidewalk while I stayed on the inside. This was new to me and I liked it, though in the moment I could not verbalize why. Only later would I realize that it was my first time walking with a crush where I felt safe with her so I was relaxed as opposed to feeling responsible for her and being on alert. She glided with a mesmerizing air of chivalry and that made her beautiful to me.

Every now and then, to pause the flow of conversation she would touch whichever arm of mine was closest to her and point in the direction of this, that, or the other happening around us. An interesting architectural detail, kids being silly, elders being silly, a unique signage, wait let’s turn here, oh let’s go this way.

On more than one occasion, she would put her arm in my way all together in order to save me from oncoming traffic because on this day I had forgotten all about looking both ways as I was occupied looking at her.

The casual yet confident arm touches were great, I wanted all of them, until I began to worry that maybe there was a limit before I would spontaneously combust from the contact. This could not happen, especially in a new country. What would the Italians think? What would she think?! Worse still, what if she got caught in the flames?! Absolutely not. I had to keep my atoms together. I would keep my atoms together. Wait, how do I keep my atoms together?!

Entonces me hice la loca. Nothing was happening here. Surely she had a playful air placement tucked away in her chart somewhere and that’s just how she was! I began to say several silly things out loud to distract myself, none of which I remember, but I remember the sound of her laughter.

We kept walking. We kept talking. About the weather, about the summer school, about our schedules, about our excitement to hear Denise Ferreira Da Silva speak, about our respective research methodologies of interest.

We talked about politics, about art, about travel, about food, about domesticity. I asked her how she liked her sandwiches cut. Diagonal, down the middle, or not at all? She had no idea because she avoided making sandwiches if she could help it. She was absent minded in the kitchen and always burning something, including toast.

I imagined making well-layered and perfectly proportioned sandwiches for her over the course of several days and varying the cuts - or lack thereof - each time so we could get this very important detail sorted.

I learned she was an anthropologist conducting ethnographic research related to migration, commerce, and the ecologies of fishing communities on the periphery of the Mediterranean. I imagined writing up a syllabus for myself so I could keep up with her brain.

She mentioned practicing muay thai in her free time. I was besotted. Is that why she walks like that? But wait, she had only just picked up the sport and her walk was a seasoned one, not a recent affectation.

Her walk had character. It was the walk of an adventurer: attuned, attentive, ready to consume all the world before her and more. I wondered what kind of life she had lived that made her move that way. I imagined what it would feel like to walk with her forever, all over the globe.

She shared that as pride month wrapped up she felt anger over pride because she was tired of the Italian state and its lies. It was all dolce vita pink washing while the reality of queerness in Italy was still a tenous one. There was still so much work to be done she said. Still so much to resist. Still so much to fight for.

Her hands were in fists as she spoke about her frustrations. I imagined a timeline where we had grown close enough that her hands would relax as I held them.

It was revealed she had strong earth placements. I was a gonner at this revelation. She could have asked me for anything and I would have said yes, but instead, she wanted to give me something - a snack!

So off we went for my first ever aperitivo.

L’apertivo

She set my first ever spritz down in front of me and pushed a bowl of chips my way.

I wanted to cry.

Usually I was the one who bought the drinks and got the food. It had never occurred to me that someone I was interested in would want to do the same for me after having just met. No one ever had.

While enjoying our aperitivo, the conversation made its way to questions of etymology. Specifically regarding encinta (Spanish) and incinta (Italian) which are old school euphemisms for pregnancy, most commonly said under hushed tones in an out-of-wedlock occurrence.

We contemplated why embarazada meant pregnant in Spanish versus embarrass in English which is a true cognate of imbarazzare in Italian and embarrasser in French (she was also fluent in French) while being a false cognate in Spanish that comically trips-up both Italian, French, and English speakers who are learning Spanish.

With an online search we found out that all these words are in fact connected by a common origin from the Portuguese word embaraçar. “Em” is Latin for “in” and “baraça” is Portuguese for “noose”, as in “in a noose.” We revisited the phrases encinta and incinta, both literally mean “wrapped in a thread/ribbon.”

Together, we thought our way through connections between the imagery of pregnancy as a state of being that could potentially have shame attached to it depending on different sociological factors. We noted the ways in which that shame or even just pregnancy in general could possibly be experienced as a kind of noose.

Somewhere along the way our drinks and chips had been moved aside so that we were both leaning over the small table, inside each other’s personal bubbles, hovering over her phone, peering intently at our search results. Eventually we both leaned back and returned to our bubbles. While leaning back into her seat she asked me “¿Te gusta investigar la etimología?” and as she spoke, the Sun enveloped her in its light. She was radiant.

As I noted her radiance, for the first time in my life I felt the urge to propose marriage. My proposal being that I am a good cook and yes I do enjoy etymological research, endlessly so. I would make a great match for a muay thai fighting anthropologist. She burns a lot of calories, I can replenish those calories. She is very smart, I can match her smart. We could bond daily over breakfast by doing an etymological search together and every Sunday I would write her a love letter using all the words from our findings the week prior. Would she like to marry me?

I quelled the proposal and instead answered with “¡Sí, me encanta!” followed by my toothy and wide wonky smile. She smiled back at me and we stayed smiling at each other for what felt like cien años pero sin soledad. She then remembered her phone and went back to investigating further linguistic connections. I returned to sipping on my spritz, munching on chips, memorizing her face.

La sera

Weaving our way around the city, something made her pause. She started beaming and pointed, “Mira, donde nos conocimos.” We had arrived back to the steps of our first meeting. I of course hadn’t noticed where we were because she was my only clear sight of vision while the rest of Bologna was a halo of soft focus around her.

She asked me if I wanted us to stop here and go our separate ways.

“No, para nada.”

“Perfecto, yo tampoco.”

We kept walking. We kept talking.

Sometimes silence would weave itself into our stroll. Other times we would pause to quietly contemplate a new detail about the city before commenting our observations to each other. Stillness and movement. Silence and conversation. All of it glistened because it was happening with her.

She mentioned how the mosquitos at her hostel were dedicated to her demise, “me están crucificando” so we went in search of bug spray at a CarreFour Express.

Stepping into the convenience store with her felt familiar, as if we had lived a thousand lives together and running errands in this iteration was an everyday thing between us. She found her bug spray and then she guided me through all the curly hair products listed in Italian which I made note of for a product run on my own a few days later.

We left the store, ducked around a few blocks and this time it was me who paused because something had managed to pull my gaze away from her: the window display of a camera shop. I had a three year background in analog film production, photography, and darkroom development. However with starting grad-school it had been over a year since I’d touched a rented camera or stepped inside a darkroom. With my birthday being on Friday maybe it was time I bought myself a camera of my own…

“Ya veo, ¡eres artista! con razón hablas así” she exclaimed. I cringed as though I had been caught naked, exposed in an unintentional ruse. I did not consider myself an artist then and did not want to misrepresent myself to her.

It was unnerving to hear someone call me what I wanted to be but was too scared to say out loud. I wondered if maybe I had shared too much of my inner world with her in that moment. How dare she stare into my soul like that? We only just met!

She said that we had to go in given my interest. I told her I didn’t speak Italian and that I didn’t want to get roped into a bad sale. She chuckled and reminded me that she was Italian and could translate.

We went inside, perused, then settled on a Nikkormat camera that the shop owner said was sturdy, within my budget, and good for a beginner who desired a camera that could be pushed with time as an amateur progressed. I wanted to think about it before purchasing and the shop owner said he would hold it for me but only for a few days.

I was so elated as we left the camera shop that I wanted to kiss her but that would not have been appropriate to our context. Instead, throughout the rest of our walk I would effusively interject with “mil gracias por traducir” over and over again. At one point I was saying thank you for translating as if we had just left the shop five minutes before when in reality two hours had gone by and we were on the subject of something else entirely.

La cena

The Sun began to leave us.

We kept walking. We kept talking. It was dinner time.

She took me to a spot where she introduced me to piadines filled with spinach and squaquerone, paired with her favorite beer.

Though she emphasized it as her favorite beer I cannot remember the brand for the life of me. But I do remember every detail of her drinking it because I found myself envying both the beer and the glass it was in.

La notte

The Moon found us.

We kept walking. We kept talking.

The energy was winding down. She was clearly fighting sleep but kept answering all my questions and asking me questions. Once again, we ended up back where we had started, near those steps. She recognized them, yet again, while I was still stuck on watching her.

It was late. Almost midnight. She offered to walk me back. I declined. It was beyond bedtime. We both had class in the morning.

She seemed incredulous about me knowing my way back and teasingly reminded me that every time I had tried to direct our walk earlier we would just loop in circles until she took over again. How could she be sure that I would actually get back ok when I didn’t even have a map downloaded for offline use? Would I please let her know when I got back in safely?

Yes of course I would and I wanted her to also let me know when she got back to her place safely. Deal.

Before walking away I asked if she was open to a hug. She tilted her head to the side, radiated a broad grin and said that normally she wasn’t a hugger but a hug from me, yes.

I felt as if I had just discovered a new galaxy and we were the only two stars in it.

Thursday we emailed each other reading list recommendations.

Friday she wished me happy birthday via WhatsApp audio and said she would reach out as soon as all her work was done for Monday.

I told myself she was just being nice and that I probably wouldn’t hear from her again. She was busy, I was busy, different classes, different activities, different social groups. Timelines diverged. Focus.

I segmented the memory of Wednesday off into its own little corner. Severed it completely from the rest of my time in Bologna. Focus.

Snippets of Wednesday would sneak into the forefront of my mind and I’d say to myself that I was embellishing. Surely it couldn’t have been as sparkling a day as I remembered it. Tall sapphic tales. Nothing more. Focus.

Martedì, 5 luglio, 2022

Tuesday evening I received an audio from her. She apologized for not having reached out sooner. Her days had been jam-packed. She caught me up on her weekend. Told me what she had been up to with her cohort. Asked if I was still thinking about going back to the camera shop and if so, she wanted to go with me. Some of her friends had come in from Rome, they were going out in a bit that Tuesday night, did I want to join them?

I listened to that audio. Stunned. She’s real?! Last Wednesday happened?!

I listened to the audio again. Ok, so baseline she definitely likes me platonically. Why else would she invite me out with her friends and follow up on the camera shop?

I listened to that audio on loop.

My bonnet was already on, nightgown on, nighttime skincare freshly done, a slice of left-over pizza hung in my hand, and I had a documentary on Bolognese stained glass windows whirring in the background. I wasn’t going anywhere.

Ay Ivana…

If I could go back in time and fairy godmother myself into a second chance, I would toss the pizza out of my hand, turn the damn tv off, rip the bonnet off, rip the nightgown off, throw on something fabulous, brush and floss and rinse my teeth, refresh my curls, put in some gold hoops, brush up my brows, gloss-up my lips, push myself out the door and GO!

I look back at who I was then and it aches to remember my inner monologue as I listened to that audio over, and over, and over.

The case I made to myself against going out:

1) I did not speak Italian. What if I made an American style fool of myself in front of her friends and they didn’t approve?

2) If things did go well, what if I was drawn to her even more? What was I supposed to do with all those feelings? Feel them? *Scoffs.* Please.

3) I liked her too much already and my liking her was disproportionate to the fact that we had only just met and that I was leaving soon anyways.

It felt safer to assume that the longing was unrequited and that going would have fueled a fantasy best kept in check.

I responded by letting her know there was no need to apologize, it had been an intense week for everyone in the program. I expressed gratitude for the invitation and shared I was already winding down for the night. I caught her up on my successful solo return to the camera shop on Friday, July 1, my birthday. I told her that I was stoked by my purchase and reiterated how grateful I was for her translation earlier.

I stayed in, bonnet on, nightgown on, skincare soaking in, munching on my pizza, watching pixilated stained glass windows with a voice over in a language I did not yet speak.

From inside a self-made echo chamber, I shattered my own heart and told myself that it was the logical thing to do.

Today

Those two weeks between June and July were an incandescent sliver of life.

Every day there were new ideas, new conversations, new foods and new drinks.

Top two new foods and a favorite drink: maritozzo con panna, squaquerone cheese, café d’orzo. Favorite restaurant in Bologna was Sfoglia Rina.

New shops like Double Trouble Bologna, an Afro-Italian family owned leather goods gem.

New friends from around the globe, new readings, new realizations, new sparks of so many thoughts that I am still mulling over today.

I ran into a Pulitzer Prize winner whom I had met the year before at UVA and to my fan-girly surprise, this historian remembered me. I had the opportunity to engage one-on-one with so many intellectual heavyweights whose words I still revisit in my notes today and whose feedback made me feel like I belonged in that world for good.

My second week in Bologna, I skipped class for an impulse booking that would result in my fourth tattoo and it is still one of my favorites. It is based on my own design and inspired by my moon sign plus tarot birth cards.

Most nights, I could be found watching a movie as just another face in the sea of people gathered at the city center for the public outdoor movie nights done every summer all around Italy.

One night, I got so miserably lost on a solo stroll that I didn’t get back to my place until 2am. It is still one of my greatest personal achievements that I navigated a new city, alone, at night, phone dead, on foot. 10/10 do not recommend, but I did it.

I remember those flashes of experiences and I marvel at the dexterity with which I was able to lean into so much while determinedly leaning away from what I wanted most back then: more time with her.
